I couldn't stop thinking about that folder all week. Phase Two: Fertility Enhancement. The words echoed through my mind at odd moments—while I made my morning coffee, while I hugged Mr. Hops at night, while I took the supplements Dr. Marcus had prescribed. I didn't know what they meant, not exactly, but something deep in my belly tightened whenever I thought about them.
By the time my next appointment arrived, I was practically vibrating with nervous energy. I'd worn a sundress like Dr. Marcus preferred—soft and floral, easy to remove—and I'd braided my hair the way he'd taught me. Mr. Hops hung from my wrist by his worn ribbon, and I stroked his matted fur in the waiting room until the nurse called my name.
