Not a tune I recognized—something low and aimless, drifting from the kitchen perhaps, threading through the study's quiet like smoke. The bars of the cage pressed familiar lines into my shoulder blade. My mouth worked the pacifier before I was fully conscious, the rhythm automatic now, my jaw moving in soft, steady pulses around the silicone bulb.
